This is a shorter, considerably less substantial post, but I need to vent. Over the past couple of weeks, we’ve had a silent battle with the Cuban university students over, of all things, assigned seats. The professors do not assign seats, but the students have all chosen their spots close to their friends, and if you sit in their spot they will tell you to get up. Sagar tried to argue the irrationality of this stance to them after class one day, and actually convinced a handful of them that “first come, first serve” is a fairer policy. Too bad that next time the class met, he got up during the midpoint break and the girl whose seat he was supposedly sitting in instantly came and moved his notebook onto the floor, and “reclaimed” her seat.
Then today in class I was sitting next to a girl who was drawing on her desk. With markers. And stencils. I mean, I know a few college students who are guilty of the occasional notebook doodle, but ON the desk? I haven’t seen that since grade school. And how many 20-somethings actually own stencils for such an occasion? Unbelievable.

dude. cultural difference. stop trying to force your ways on them all of you guys. you're in a different country, stop holding everything against an american standard and go with the flow.
*sigh* again, you misinterpret my post. just because i´m in a different country doesn´t mean that i can´t have my own opinions (for the record, i never would have argued with the cuban students like sagar did, despite my thinking that it´s a stupid system). and anyway, in my opinion the purpose of study abroad isn´t only to learn about the culture in which one is placed. it´s an exchange of ideas... we see the way they do things here, and we tell them how we do them where we come from. everyone can take as many facts as are presented and draw their own conclusions, just like the girl who took sagar´s seat decided that ¨first come, first serve¨ wasn´t for her. it, like everything in life, is just a way to learn more about the world.
